Die Idee zu CAT LAKE CITY ist während der Arbeit an einem anderen Film entstanden. Das Bild einer angelnden Katze auf einem See war plötzlich so etwas wie eine fixe Idee, festgehalten in Form eines kleinen und eher unscheinbaren Scribbles auf dem Whiteboard. Aber wie es bei Stoffentwicklung so häufig passiert: Wir haben die Idee dann erst mal nicht verwendet. Die Zeichnung auf dem Whiteboard im Studio aber blieb, und wir überlegten, was wir damit machen könnten. Ein ganzer Kosmos an Absurdität hing plötzlich in der Luft: Eine Katze auf einem See – was um alles in der Welt macht die da? Und tadaaa: CAT LAKE CITY war geboren. Der beste Katzenurlaubsort der Welt.     

Ein Name für unseren Protagonisten „Percy Cat“ war ebenfalls rasch gefunden (denn Percy heisst unser Studiokater;), und zugleich auch die Vorstellung, was für ein Zeitgenosse er wäre, wie er sich in bestimmten Situationen verhalten würde. Was er konkret in CAT LAKE CITY erleben sollte, war zunächst keinesfalls so eindeutig. Wir haben es dann sowohl durch improvisierende Animation herausgefunden, bei der wir ihn sozusagen direkt ins kalte Wasser beförderten und einfach agieren ließen; und danach in verschiedenen Stoffentwicklungssitzungen, in deren Rahmen die Enten als Seitencharaktere und der gesamte Handlungsbogen Gestalt annahmen. Wir haben in dieser Phase viele Dinge überlegt und verworfen. Dass der Film jedoch episodischen Charakter haben sollte, war von Beginn an Teil des Konzepts.     

Nach längerer Animationsphase (oooh ja, frame by frame Animation ist sehr aufwändig) konnten wir den Film im Herbst 2018 mit die Vertonung schließlich abrunden. Die beschwingte Musik, die Geräusche und Percys Stimme (in deren Findung unsere letzte kreative Entscheidung bestand) haben CAT LAKE CITY am Ende zu Wirklichkeit gemacht.
